Attractions and Venues

The versatility of The Dow Event Center with its multi-purpose venues featuring a 7,500 seat arena easily hosting conventions, exhibits, concerts and sporting events such as the OHL Saginaw Spirit Hockey and the CIFL Saginaw Sting Indoor Football teams. The theatre seats 2,300 and is home to the Broadway In Saginaw Series each season along with comedy, smaller concerts and community events. The Hall offers the elegance and flexibility to accommodate weddings, galas, fundraisers, meeting and special events with in its 10,000 square foot walls. Patrons are greeted beneath a sky-lit dome known as the Atrium as they enter the facility which also offers a unique venue for special events.

What was formerly the home to the Saginaw Center Mall is now under construction in the 300 block of Johnson St. to be a multipurpose outdoor venue designed to attract a wide range of local & national events and draw people to downtown Saginaw. Set to open in August 2013, the venue will include a pavilion, main stage and grassy area capable of holding 5,500 people with the option of expanding into the neighboring parking lot once the site of the Saginaw Plaza Hotel.

The year was 1926 and Saginaw, Michigan was without a concert hall after the beautiful Conservatory of Music burned. The City was growing and the Elf Khurafeh Shrine was planning to build a Temple and move from the Masonic Lodge building across the street from the proposed site. At this same time Colonel W. S. Butterfield, head of the Butterfield Theatre chain, was looking to build a flagship theatre for his chain in Saginaw. When the Colonel met the Shrine who planned to build an auditorium as part of their temple, the die was cast. Collaboration was formed with the Shrine and Butterfield who agreed to furnish and lease the theatre for 30 years.

The customers a the Downtown Saginaw Farmers' Market represents every walk of life in the Saginaw area. Families with young children push strollers past Market tables while senior citizens carefully look over the produce under the blue and white stripped tents. People from nearby offices -AT&T and St. Mary's Hospital among them- stop to buy lunch from one of the four food vendors or soup in the fall. Retirees look over fresh flowers, fruit, and vegetables on dark green market tables. Volunteers at community tables share information with anyone who stops by at their display space. Mothers and seniors receiving WIC and Project FRESH meet up with local agencies to receive their coupons and purchase their fresh Michigan-grown produce at the Market. All of these people are drawn to the Market by the ability to purchase local food directly form the farmers and get the freshest food in the area.

Historic Hoyt Park, conveniently located downtown next to the Saginaw Children's Zoo and across from the Japanese Cultural Center and Tea House, provides a plethora of fun and family-oriented activities for individuals of all ages. Ojibway Island

The City of Saginaw is home to Ojibway Island-downtown's very own island park along the Saginaw River. The Island's naturally lush scenery and opportune location provides for beautiful strolls along the water and many spots to seek calming shade and relaxation, all with a view of the Saginaw River. In addition to fun family activities such as leisurely bike rides, fishing on the docks, and enjoyable picnics, Ojibway Island is host to many annual events such as the WKCQ Country Music Fest and Fourth of July fireworks in the summer, and ice fishing every winter.

The Children’s Zoo features a variety of animals ranging from small insects to our large Clydesdale Horses. We are currently home to over 150 animals (and that’s not including the thousands of insects!) year round. While visiting the Zoo, you may run in to a few of our feathered friends walking the beautiful gardens and walkways. Peacocks and peahens roam our Zoo grounds and make sure to watch for those waddling ducks around the large pond. Be sure to take part in our hands-on experiences with our hoof stock yards which include alpacas, alpine goats, and cows. Oh, and let’s not forget the little pot-bellied pig who rules it all. Our black-footed penguins will wow you with their amazing speed and grace as they glide effortlessly through the water. The capuchin monkeys will make you laugh (or duck) as they search for the tasty treats the keepers have hidden in their exhibit. Or perhaps you would prefer to take a walk-a-bout through our eastern grey kangaroo exhibit. One may even hop across your path! Enjoy the colors and fragrances of the breathtaking gardens as you stroll along our paths and through our colorful butterfly house.

Andersen Enrichment Center

The elegant art deco facility is considered the jewel of Celebration Square and is located in Saginaw's park district adjacent to the Saginaw Children's Zoo, Ojibway Island and the Splash Park at Celebration Square. The Center boasts a window wall overlooking a formal rose garden, outdoor fountains and elegant sculpture. Creating memorable occasions since 1993, the facility and garden have received awards from Keep Michigan Beautiful, Inc. and the American Society of Landscape Architects.
